Once upon a time…
…there was a young girl who understood the language of birds and knew the healing powers of alpine herbs. Vogellisi cherished her freedom to do as she pleased. The mountains were her source of strength, the nature surrounding Adelboden her home. She longed to live as freely as the birds. But when her father perished in the slate mines, her idyllic world was shattered. From then on, she had to care for herself and her ailing mother…
The embellished story written by Adelboden native Annemarie Stähli recounts the early, impoverished times in Adelboden. Set at the beginning of the 20th century, just when Adelboden was welcoming its first grand hotels and distinguished guests, it’s a story of courage, justice, and the power of friendship.
At VogellisiBerg, Annemarie Stähli’s Vogellisi story is ever-present throughout the year. From Sillerenbühl to Metschstand, Vogellisi’s homeland embodies groundedness, naturalness, tradition, and a deep love for Swiss culture. Those who follow in Vogellisi’s footsteps discover an entirely new, enchantingly beautiful world.
By the way: Vogellisi has many faces and stories, and even the locals can’t agree on which tradition holds true. Was Vogellisi the girl described above, who could converse with birds? Another legend depicts her as an old herbalist with a kind face, who lived secluded with her birds deep in Bütschi, collecting herbs and knowing a natural remedy for every ailment, even endorsed by the village doctor. There is also a famous song in Switzerland about Vogellisi that features a young woman who is known for her nightlife.
As diverse as the tales surrounding Vogellisi may be, her great fame, popularity, and timelessness are undisputed – at VogellisiBerg and beyond the community and national borders.
